Uratakao Bridge Project, Metropolitan Inter-City Expressway

Bridge Pier Project
URATAKAO Town, Hachioji City, Tokyo, Japan

The Uratakao Bridge will be part of the Metropolitan Inter-City Expressway, which will run in a ring from Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture to Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture.
The pier of the bridge, which is located in the Southern Hachioji Junction of the expressway, is formed by pre-stressed reinforced concrete, whereas the box girder is a 4-span continuous ‘rahmen’ construction. The span lengths of the upper main track vary from 51.5 meter to 140.5 meter, of the lower main track from 67.0 meter to 155.0 meter.

In this project PERI’s VARIO Wall Formwork is being used for the reinforced concrete in the hollow section of the pier. The 4 units are between 29.8 meter and 46.5 meter high. The VARIO is set on the bracket being supported by the whole scaffolding. The pier is integrally constructed from the foundation to the upper part.

When it came to the comparison of conventional formwork and the formwork system supplied by PERI at tendering stage the focus lay mainly on costs, accuracy and schedule.
The casting height of 6.00 meter and the possibility of re-using the whole formwork system several time lead to a significant shortening of the construction schedule. Moreover the assembly and disassembly works are considered as easy and fast – compared to the conventional way -, and the simple joints of the VARIO panels are also favored. Because the girders are made out of timber the total weight is light and thus the handling is convenient.
With these arguments PERI could meet the customer’s requirements in regards to the economic efficiency, the construction accuracy and the requirements time-wise. That is why the PERI solution was approved and the technical proposal could be adapted to this project.
